The Mining Engineering Student Association of UPN “Veteran” Yogyakarta itself was established on May 27, 1994 with the first chairman, Cahyo Kurniawan. The purpose of the establishment of the Mining Engineering Student Association UPN “Veteran” Yogyakarta is as a forum for members to channel their aspirations and also to develop the interests and talents of members. The HMTA UPN “Veteran” Yogyakarta has several fields, namely the field of human resources, research and development, information and communication, advocacy, business funds, secretarial, and external fields.

As a forum for members to develop their interests and talents, HMTA UPN “Veteran” Yogyakarta has seven Student Study Groups (KSM), namely KSM Duta (Dangdut Tambang), KSM Ilmiah, KSM Potret, KSM MEC (Mining English Club), KSM Basket, KSM Futsal, and KSM Badminton. Through the activities organized by the association, it is hoped that it will produce superior and qualified graduates, who will later work in several mining companies, both in Indonesia and abroad.

HMTA itself has an inverted triangle-shaped logo with an orange base color. Each component of this logo holds some meaning in it. The meaning of the HMTA emblem or mining triangle is as follows:

• The shape of an inverted triangle means powerful, tough, respected, prioritizes honesty, prioritizes climax in achieving achievements, and always moves forward in achieving greater achievements.
• The mining triangle has 3 equal sides, meaning that in mining activities there are 3 main activities, namely unloading, loading and transportation.
• The basic color is orange, which means the color of victory from those born from the UPN “Veteran” Yogyakarta mine, besides that orange is the color that has the brightest gradation in darkness.
• There is a silhouette of a mining person wearing a Safety Helmet which means a figure depicting a mining professional in the world of work with horizontal shading lines symbolizing speed in reaching the top of a career in half-time (triangle area). Besides this, the meaning of Helmet Safety is that mining people always prioritize safety in carrying out any activity.
• In the mining triangle there are light areas and dark areas / shaded areas which mean that the mining system is divided into 2, namely the open or surface mining system and the underground mining system.
